So, what exactly is a GMO anyway. You’ve probably heard those initial thrown around lately but really don’t an understanding of what it means. GMO stands for “genetically modified organisms.” Anything that is considered a GMO organism has been genetically engineered, meaning genetic material has been altered (genetic modification involves the mutation, insertion, or deletion of genes, how can this turn out good) using genetic engineering techniques.
So why on earth would “they” think that GMOs are good? The majority of commercial GMOs are engineered to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide. So in theory, it is meant to make crops more sustainable and yield a higher return. However, things are starting to point back at GMOs being the cause of health problems, and environmental damage. The crazy thing is, the United States is one of the few that has approved GMO production. And that decision is based on studies that were conducted by the same corporations that create and profit from the sale of the GMO.
What are the health concern with GMOs? Production of new allergens, increased toxicity, decreased nutrition, and antibiotic resistance. My personal opinion, when you go messing around with the DNA of something it is no longer designed the way the Creator designed it. How can that be good? Some lab studies have shown that 7 of 20 rats who ingested GMO tomatoes developed stomach lesions (bleeding stomachs); while another 7 of 40 died within two weeks. Aspartame, the diet sweetener, is actually a product of genetic engineering and you know that stuff is not good for you. The four major genetically engineered crops are soy, corn, canola, or cottonseed. Think about that. Corn and canola appear in almost everything. Do yourself a huge favor, remember to read your food labels!
If you are concerned about GMOs like I am, eat organic whenever possible. Organic foods are not allowed to contain GM ingredients. Even the small percentage of non-organic ingredients allowed in foods labeled organic have to be non GMO.
